About Maarika Rool

Maarika holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Acupuncture and is a full member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), working to their strict code of practice and standards of hygiene, safety and professional conduct.

She also holds a BSc in Gene Technology, giving her a scientific grounding alongside her training in Chinese medicine. She has been treating patients for a variety of symptoms for a number of years, and is regularly recommended for her reassuring, calm manner and her professionalism.

Ear (Auricular) Acupuncture

Ear acupuncture — also called auricular acupuncture — is one of Maarika’s particular interests. It uses very fine needles at specific points on the outer ear, which in Chinese medicine is treated as a map of the whole body. Points may be needled during a session, or small seeds or studs left in place for a few days so the effect continues between appointments.

Because the ear is easy to access, auricular acupuncture can be used on its own or alongside body acupuncture within the same appointment.

Abdominal Acupuncture

Maarika is also particularly interested in abdominal acupuncture, a gentle style that uses shallow needling of points on the abdomen. It is a notably light approach, which some patients prefer if they are new to acupuncture or nervous about needles.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Techniques

Alongside acupuncture, Maarika draws on the wider toolkit of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Which techniques she uses depends on you and is always discussed first:

  • Cupping — glass or silicone cups create gentle suction on the skin to lift the tissue underneath. Cups may be held still or glided across the area. Temporary circular marks are normal and fade within a few days.
  • Tui Na — a Chinese massage technique using rhythmic pressing, kneading and stretching along the same channels used in acupuncture. It is done through clothing and can be given with or without needles.
  • Moxibustion — warming acupuncture points by burning moxa (dried mugwort) near the skin, either on the end of a needle or held just above the point.
  • Gua Sha — a smooth-edged tool is stroked firmly across oiled skin. Like cupping, it can leave temporary surface redness that settles within a few days.

What to Expect

Your initial consultation lasts 1.5 hours. Maarika will take a full case history — your symptoms, general health, sleep, digestion and lifestyle — and carry out a traditional Chinese medicine assessment before discussing a plan with you. Treatment usually begins in the same session, and your consent is taken first.

Follow-up sessions last 50 minutes. Loose, comfortable clothing is best, as some points are on the arms, legs and abdomen. It helps to eat something beforehand rather than arrive hungry, and to take it easy for the rest of the day afterwards.

Acupuncture is a complementary therapy and does not replace medical care. Please tell Maarika about any medication you take or medical conditions you have, and continue any treatment prescribed by your GP.
